Hi friend,
How are you? I hope you had a nice and productive week.
Here is something I bet you experienced more than once.
Have you ever looked at a creative, and something didn’t sit well?
It wasn’t the brand, the colors, or the message, but somehow, something you can’t put your finger on was not clicking.
I’ve recently thought about this classic snag we all occasionally go through as visual storytellers only to find out later that the solution was actually staring at us all along.
And then I saw this…
The other day, I came across a YouTube video about Andromeda Theatre in Cammarata, Sicily.
This breathtaking place is the work of Lorenzo Reina, a shepherd and artist who created this piece in 1984.
As you can see, the 108 seats made of cubic stone blocks are set in a way that traces the stars of the constellation of Andromeda.
From above, these seats make up eight corner stars. They also make sense ergonomically, simulating a riding posture.
All this backstory is fascinating, but my first impression was locked on something else.
Before I tell you, what is the first element in the photo that captures your eye? Zoom in if you want to see closer. It’s small but makes a big difference.
Let’s see if we see the same thing.
What first struck me were those cleverly designed seats.
In particular, such a small change, like rotating the top stone, completely revamps the visual narrative.
This simple visual technique spoke to me, maybe because I’m a great believer in minimalist design that effortlessly tells a rich story.
It was likely top of mind for me because, in a recent story, I talked about the magic of rotating photos to open up new visual sensibilities.
If you recall I covered this in:
So, next time you get stuck on a visual story, trying to figure out how to unlock its full impact, sometimes a tiny inexpensive change can make a huge difference.
It’s often just a matter of lightly tweaking the elements you already have.
See you next time!
Best,
