Hello friend,
How are you? I hope you’re doing well.
The gist:
It’s hard to believe, but video calls gained popularity back in 2006/7 with the emergence of Skype. Interestingly, after a 20-year run, Microsoft is about to retire Skype in May. In the early 2000s, audio conference calls were dominant for work as bandwidth was still tricky. A 2004 viral spoof, A Conference Call in Real Life, captured the typical hiccups of the medium. These days, jumping on Zoom or Google Meet calls - by now - has become second nature to your daily meeting schedule. It’s easy and versatile. This real-time visual storytelling medium allows you to share presentations and videos, create breakout rooms for training large audiences, automatically take notes, whiteboarding, and much more. On the downside, it can’t replace in-person meetings, and it comes with what is known as “Zoom Fatigue” after 10 back-to-back meetings. This is all about to change. Later this year, Alphabet’s Google and HP are about to launch Project Starline - real-time 3-D video.
Find out why this is an important milestone and what simple tips you can apply in the meantime to enrich your 2-D virtual communications. :)
